Buying a Domain Name

Buying a Domain Name

Buying a domain name can be a scary thing for someone who hasn't done it before. But in today's web-world, it has become a commonplace stable of business. The world now expects you to have a domain name. This is an easy guide to buying a domain name.

When buying a domain name, consider your business, people like to get an idea of what your company is all about by the mere mention of your domain name.  You need to be specific when trying to reserve a domain name.

If your business is construction and the name of your business is Acme Construction, then naturally you would want to try and reserve this type of domain, not just the word "Acme". Why? Because Acme may be short and sweet, but it says nothing about what you do, and having the word construction in it is considered keyword enriched, which will in turn give you extra points in Google.

To take that point a bit further, when buying a domain, try and be ultra specific. If your company does roofing construction exclusively, then consider buying a domain that is "roofingconstruction.com." or a derivative of such. Doing this will win you even more points with Google and help you to get on the first page of results in the search engine listings.

When buying a domain name, it is also the best idea, in my educated opinion, to always try and buy a ".com" domain. If your first choice is not available in .com, you can try adding a dash between your words or you can try and go for a ".net" or a ".org". But try and get a .com if you can. It is the business standard.

Once again, when buying a domain name for your company, try and buy a .com domain. If the one you had your heart set on isn't available you can try placing dashes between the words, or you can change the wording around a bit. Or you can even try adding short words to the end, like "fast" or "info" or "now". So that would make it "acmeconstructionnow.com."

Another option to consider when buying a domain name is locality. You can tack on the name of your state, your city or town. This will even further focus you within Googles eyes for placement in the search engines.

Buying a domain name can also be confusing as far as who to buy your domain name through. There are many companies out there almost falling over themselves to make you the best offer so that you buy your domain name through them instead of their competitors.

The prices for buying a domain name can vary by a big amount. I've seen domain names for sale from 89 cents for a .info domain, all the way up to $40 dollars or more. The average for buying a domain name is around ten dollars per year of registration of purchasing your domain name. If the company is asking any more for it, than read the fine print and find out what the plusses are to buying a domain name through them.

A lot of people are under the misconception that they must purchase a domain through their ISP or content provider. While the service that these companies provide make it simpler for individuals and companies to purchase domains, you can do it yourself without any help (or fees) for the service. We're going to give you some tips, and show you some interesting facts that you may not be aware of, even if you're a regular domain dominator.
